About Humberto Ribeiro, Visiting Scholar, Johnson at Cornell: Humberto Luiz Ribeiro is a Brazilian entrepreneur, who
has started and operated various ventures in the IT, BPM, outsourcing and biocapacity sectors. In August, 2014 he joined
Johnson as a Visiting Scholar; his research focus is in the growth of services sector in emerging markets and new
perspectives on global trade in services.
In 2011, he was appointed the Secretary of Commerce and Services in the Brazilian Ministry of Development and Foreign
Trade and served for 3.5 years. He promoted major transformational initiatives within the government, such as
streamlining processes for opening a business from 120 days to 48 hours and helping to create and formalize 4+ million
new businesses. He also created the Official Catalog for Investment Opportunities, a support instrument that
collaborated to attract a country record of US$200+ billion in foreign direct investment from 2011 to 2014, and directly
promoted public policies to foster entrepreneurship and achieve the lowest unemployment rate in Brazil's history. His
emphasis on developing new Services Industries and modernizing local supply chains, resulted in annual growth rates
from 4 to 12% during his term for these segments.
Humberto holds a Bachelor in Civil & Environmental Engineering from the University of Brasilia, an MBA in Government
Administration and has participated in executive programs at MIT, INSEAD, the Wharton School, and Georgetown
University. He has been a member of the National Leaders Forum Brazil since 2001. The World Economic Forum
nominated Humberto as Global Leader for Tomorrow in 2002, recognized one of his companies as a Global Growth Company in 2007, and asked him to serve as a Global Council Member in 2012. He is a recipient of numerous awards
and recognitions, including the Federal Medal of Victory from Brazil in 2014.
