Join the Adam Smith Society at Cornell Johnson on its first series of lectures on Thursday, October 24th after Sage Social. Food and Drinks (Beer, Wine, and Soda) will be provided.

Why are we devastated by a word of criticism even when it's mixed with lavish praise? Because our brains are wired to focus on the bad. This negativity e´¼Çect explains things great and small: why countries blunder into disastrous wars, why couples break up, why government keeps growing, how schools fail students, why football coaches stupidly punt on fourth down. All day long, the power of bad governs people's moods, drives marketing campaigns, and dominates news and politics. Drawing from his upcoming book, The Power of Bad, John Tierney will discuss the negativity effect's implications for the business world: what kind of people to hire, what kind of customers to focus on, what strategies to pursue online and in the office.
