Mr. Crawford is a co-founder and the Chief Executive Officer of MicroVest, investment advisor specializing in pro-poor financial institutions. He is responsible for leading MicroVest's investment operations and strategy since its founding in 2003. He led the launch of MicroVest I, LP, the first North American based private equity vehicle focused on microfinance.
Before MicroVest Capital Management, Mr. Crawford worked for the Latin American Financial Markets Division at the International Finance Corporation (IFC), focusing on commercial investments in microfinance institutions. Prior to joining IFC, Mr. Crawford created and ran Seed Capital Development Fund, a US based non-profit firm, which developed funds to capitalize microfinance institutions. Prior to Seed Capital, Mr. Crawford was the Assistant Project Director for Africa Venture Capital Project, designed to create risk capital firms in Africa.
Mr. Crawford received his bank training at Chase Manhattan Bank in the mid-80s after working for the Red Cross in Chad and the State Department in Guinea. He graduated from Bates College in 1980 and SAIS at Johns Hopkins University in 1983. He has since returned to SAIS to co-teach a finance course on impact investing. Mr. Crawford is fluent in English and conversant in French, Spanish and Swedish.
Currently Mr. Crawford serves on the Boards of Lumni, Inc. and American Capital and has recently joined the newly formed non-profit Tunisian-American Enterprise Fund.
Mr. Crawford is a former member of the Steering Committee for the Agriculture Finance Support Facility, a joint World Bank and Gates Foundation initiative. Mr. Crawford has also been a Member of ProFund's Investment Committee.
