The Johnson Dean’s Office is excited to welcome Dr. Megha Kumar to campus on April 16 as a part of the Dean’s Speaker Series in AI, Business, and Ethics.

Megha leads Oxford Analytica’s work on the Global Technology, Media and Telecommunications (TMT) sector, advising major corporate and public-sector clients on the global public policy, geopolitics and regulation of cybersecurity, disruptive technologies and the digital economy. Megha’s work on digital labour platforms was published by Digital Future Society in 2022. Previously, she led our Asia analysis, specialising in South Asia (particularly India) Indonesia and Thailand, advising G20 governments, multinational corporations and multilateral institutions on these emerging markets. Before joining Oxford Analytica, Megha taught history and politics at the University of Oxford and held the prestigious Past and Present Research Fellowship at the University of London. She has worked as a journalist in Delhi. Her broadcast appearances include outlets such as the BBC, South China Morning Post, The Diplomat and Time Magazine. Her book Communalism and Sexual Violence in India: The Politics of Gender, Ethnicity and Conflict was published by I.B. Tauris in June 2016. She holds a DPhil and an MSt from the University of Oxford, where she was a Rhodes Scholar, and a BA from the University of Delhi.

As AI continues its rapid evolution, policymakers, business leaders and civil society are struggling to keep pace with the risks and opportunities this technology represents. AI promises to democratize access to information, drive economic efficiencies from sectors ranging from agriculture to services, improve public security and create new pathways to ecological sustainability. However, synthetic content threatens to degrade public discourse, AI-powered automation looms over a range of skilled jobs, AI-based surveillance tools infringe on privacy rights, and the technology’s high electricity and water needs create an environmental paradox. Amid deepening geopolitical rifts, and increasing competition among states over technological supremacy, regulatory frameworks are also diverging. This talk explores some of these key implications of the AI revolution.
