Storytelling for Business

Storytelling often gets a bad rap in the business world. It sounds like creative writing, like bedtime stories, like something very far from the third quarter reports, consulting recommendations and financial analyses that make up so much of our lives. But substitute “specificity" for "story telling" and we can get closer to the power of a narrative. By using some ancient rhetorical techniques, personal memories, and a belief that what you’re saying is worth hearing, we can reveal a new way of shaping business communication.

Participants will come to the workshop having read several handouts distributed in advance, with a three-minute presentation to share, either a self-introduction or a business report, whichever is most relevant. We’ll rework the presentation for different audiences and find the hidden narrative if it isn’t obvious, and have another chance to present to either the same or different audiences.

The goal is to expand our comfort zones, rather than adopting an approach that is totally foreign. We will learn how to reframe what we present in ways that will reach different audiences, and move them to act.

Workshop attendees will learn how to:

  • Escape the trap of being tied to PowerPoint
  • Engage audiences and gain emotional buy-in
  • Use day-to-day experiences to make and reinforce points in meetings and presentations
