Scuba Leadership Expedition

During the Johnson Scuba Leadership Expedition, students will travel to the Bahamas  where they’ll test and enhance their leadership skills in an unpredictable, challenging, and dynamic wilderness environment: the crystal-clear waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

What will students learn on the Johnson Scuba Leadership Expedition?

  • the experience of ambiguity and adversity;
  • the chance to make decisions with incomplete, inconclusive, and/or conflicting information;
  • the responsibility of assuming  responsibility for a group; and,
  • the benefit of receiving real-time feedback and coaching on their leadership efforts.

In short, this is a chance to practice, rather than just talk about, real leadership.

What is the Scuba Expedition Experience?
For the duration of the experience, students will be live on a dedicated boat and participate in dives with their expedition team. If you join us, you will be able to practice your leadership and followership in an unknown and challenging environment and will receive feedback on your efforts.

How do Johnson Leadership Expeditions support student development?

Leadership Expeditions are a chance to leave Ithaca and dig in, full-time, to your leadership development. Expeditions are designed to give students the opportunity to go through the Johnson leadership Learning cycle of instruction, experience, and review multiple times during an intense, immersive experience.

Expedition Logistics
Dates: March 28 - April 4, 2025.
Students must be on the boat by noon on March 29, but are encouraged to arrive the day before (i.e., no later than March 28) for a group meal in the late afternoon or evening.  The expedition ends on April 4. Dates are not flexible.

Required Abilities and Certifications:  All participants must be able to swim and pass a swim test.
Participants must be Scuba certified by the start of the expedition. If you already hold a Scuba certification, you will be asked to provide that. If you would like to
obtain your open-water scuba certification through Cornell, there are opportunities to do so. The certification course will cost extra and include online course work, applied practice in the pool on set dates, and a final sign off dive will be onsite in the Bahamas.

Required Expedition Sessions: You must be available for pre-and post-expedition sessions in order to participate. These sessions will include leadership content and cohort activities and will be arranged based on the schedules of the faculty and the cohort members.

Eligibility: The expedition is open to all Johnson residential Ithaca-based MBAs who have not been on another Leadership Expedition. MBAs are only eligible to participate in one Leadership Expedition.  This program is not open MBA Exchange students.

Academic Credit: Students will earn 1.5 academic credits for completion.

Expedition Fees: The course costs for this expedition are still being finalized and will be provided soon. In addition to course fees, students will need to pay for round-trip airfare, a hotel and meals on March 28, and Scuba Certification (if not already certified).  Please note that all meals and dive gear (such as tanks, air refills, etc) are provided on the boat and covered by the program fee. Leadership Programs recommends that students budget approximately $3,500-$4000 in total to participate, as airfare can vary widely from year to year and is difficult to predict. Some students might qualify for student loans to help cover the costs of the expedition since this is an academic class, but you must make an appointment with a financial aid officer to find out if you qualify.

How to apply: The application will open here in mid-September.
