Leadership Expeditions & Excursions

Leadership Programs

Leadership Expeditions and Excursions are a chance to leave Ithaca and dig in, full-time, to your leadership development. These experiences are designed to give students the opportunity to go through the Johnson leadership learning cycle of instruction, experience, and review multiple times in an intensive, condensed timeframe.

In short, they are a chance to practice, rather than just talk about, real leadership.

Adirondacks Leadership Excursion
Students canoe and camp in the Adirondack region, following leave no trace principles and taking on rotating responsibilty for leading the group. This expedition runs at the beginning of the academic year.Leadership Programs

Patagonia Leadership Expedition
(pictured to the right)
Students travel to the Patagonia region in Chile where they experience backcountry life as they travel and camp together for 10 days. This expedition in run in partnership with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) and takes place over winter break. Students learn and practice leadership and followership, make decisions with incomplete information, and face ambiguity and uncertainint, applying coursework from pre-expedition sessions in the field as responsibility for the group is rotated throughout the expedition.

US Marine Corps Base Quantico Leadership Excursion
Students take on a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience military leadership for 48 hours. Cornell joins MBAs from Wharton and Penn State at the USMC Officer Candidate School in Quantico, Virginia for this experience. From sleeping in the barracks to leading a small fire team and participating in the famous Leadership Reaction Course, this experience provides a unique view of military leadership few civilians get to have. This expedition takes place in spring.

Scuba Leadership Expedition
In spring 2022, Johnson piloted its first Scuba Leadership Expedition. Students rotate leadership responsibilities and work on developing their personal leadership goals while on a Scuba trip to the Bahamas. This expedition takes place over spring break. Students must be Scuba certified prior to the expedition to participate; opportunties to complete this may be provided.
