New York City is known for being the world financial district. But the Big Apple has a lot more to offer than that, including numerous opportunities for students pursuing a career in Media, Entertainment & Sports. In November 2015, the Media, Entertainment & Sports (ME&S) Club organized a trek to NYC to check out some of these career opportunities as well as to connect with alumni and potential partners.
On the first day, our agenda included a visit to NBC Universal. NBCU is located in the iconic 30 Rockefeller Plaza building and the opportunity to see this space alone would’ve been worth the trip. During our visit, recruiters, managers and special guests Dave Kaplan (SVP Research & Insights) and Zach Schlessel (Sr. Director Research & Insights) from Bravo, shared their experiences and view of the media market.
After lunch the group met with Ross Jenkins, Managing Partner and US Analytics and Audience Intelligence Lead at Xaxis. Ross spent almost two hours sharing the challenges of his role and discussing his experience working for a company that is a world leader in its segment. Xaxis is the market leader in connecting global advertisers to audiences with programmatic media.
The day ended with the crew splitting off to attend two different events. A few students checked out a panel at Columbia Journalism School, Parsing Tech Talk, and others decided to attend the panel Issues and Opportunities for the Future of Media at Simulmedia.
The second day began with a cocktail brunch at Viacom where we had the opportunity to mingle with our counterparts from other MBA programs.
Brunch was followed by a panel discussion attended by senior leaders from diverse business units within the organization. The panel provided insight into functional areas of expertise, offered unique perspectives on the changing media landscape, and answered a host of burning questions from the audience. After the panel wrapped, a few of the senior executives were kind enough to stay behind with the recruiters to discuss the opportunities available at Viacom.
In the afternoon, the ME&S trek headed across town to meet with Tom Glick, Cornell alum and president of the New York City Football Club. There, we had the pleasure of learning more about the strategy, goals and views of the youngest MLS franchise. As Mr. Glick emphasized, the club only began playing in the MLS in 2015 but has been able to retain an average of 40K supporters per home game, an impressive number even by the rich and traditional European standards.
The conversation also touched on the partnership with Manchester City, the project to create many “City Teams” around the world (Auckland City and, of course, Manchester City, are already a reality) and the franchise project to attract top players that have so far seen the American market as secondary and only good for those close to retirement.
The last stop on our trek was a coffee chat with Kyle Scott, Associate Producer of NBC News. Kyle, who is a Cornell alum, shared his experiences and view of the industry. He also gave us an overview of the challenges faced by those who have recently started in the industry but left us with the feeling that the obstacles faced were worth the reward.
