Part 1: The Non-Profit Cultural Economy: Making a Positive Difference in Your Community

Steven Bronfenbrenner (Cornell BA 1979 and MBA 1981) is a leader and authority in the non-profit sector, with a core expertise in sound, innovative, and pragmatic financial management and project leadership. In founding the Bronfenbrenner Consulting Group in 1993, which initially operated as B Squared Consulting, Steven defined a unique model for serving and advancing non-profit initiatives by leveraging his extensive experience as a senior non-profit manager to offer clients excellent, collaborative, and cost-effective consulting services. His accomplishments include planning and operations of performing arts centers, strategic planning for orchestras, building governance and management capacity, and capital and operational fundraising successes.

Steven offers leadership and critical thinking to the non-profit sector. He played an advisory role in the implementation of Financial Accounting Standards 116 and 117 – the basis of net asset accounting. He has served as panelist and speaker for a number of organizations including the League of American Orchestras, the United States Institute of Theatre Technology, Association of California Symphony Orchestras, National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts, Los Angeles County Arts Commission, Cornell University, and others.

Mr. Bronfenbrenner received his Bachelor's Degree in Economics, Government, and Music and Masters of Business Administration in Finance from Cornell University. His management experience includes Chief Financial Officer of San Francisco Ballet and Endowment Foundation, Manager of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, and Executive Director of the Springfield (MA) Orchestra. He began his consulting career with C. W. Shaver & Company in New York City working with a broad range of clients including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Whitaker Center for Arts, Science and Education in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and many others.

Steven's work is complemented by his passion for the arts. He is an accomplished pianist and active vocalist performing in operas and as a choral soloist. He has appeared at the Royal College of Music in London England, Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Marin Center (California), and numerous community and educational venues. He has an in-depth knowledge of orchestral and choral repertoire.
