JOHNSON BOOK CLUB RECOMMENDS
Professor Risa Mish: Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. Literary fiction is my grand passion, and I have a list of Risa's All-Time Favorites* that I regularly update. Though I mainly read American and British writers, I am making a conscious effort to expand my literary horizons, exploring works by outstanding writers from other parts of the world. Among the works by non-US/UK writers that have impressed me greatly are: The Door by Magda Szabo (Hungary), The Vegetarian by Han Kang (Korea), To the End of the Land by David Grossman (Israel), and Fever Dream by Samantha Schweblin (Argentina).

No matter how widely I read, though, one novel that will never lose its place in my personal pantheon is Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. I did not read it until my junior year of college, when I took a course entitled "Major Women Novelists," taught by Cornell English Department star, Professor Molly Hite.

It is easy to read Pride and Prejudice as a merely typical example of the eighteenth and nineteenth century "marriage plot" tale; however, to do so would be to underestimate it greatly. It is so much more than that.

*If you are a fan of literary fiction, and are interested in knowning what else is currently on my All-Time Favorites List, feel free to reach out: rmm22.
