Luis Fernando Samper began his career in 1987 in the coffee industry in the commercial area of the National Federation of Coffee Growers of Colombia (FNC), one of the world’s largest rural NGOs based in Bogotá. He was subsequently assigned responsibilities associated with issues of logistics and transportation of coffee, based in the Netherlands and the United States. In 1997, he joined Colombian Coffee Federation Inc. (CCF), the US subsidiary of the National Federation of Coffee Growers of Colombia, where he worked for five years overseeing the areas of marketing, sales and advertising of Colombian coffee in North America. As President of CCF, was also a member of the committees of market research for the National Coffee Association and the Coffee Association of Canada. He is coauthor of the book “Juan Valdez, the Strategy behind the Brand”.
Erik Simanis: “The Numbers Side of Social Enterprise: Profitably Selling to Mass Markets in Frontier Economies” (Details), Friday, April 17, 9:15-10:30 am, Statler
Erik will walk through a four-step, bottom-up financial modeling approach that factors in the unique business challenges of low-income markets. The model is the basis of Erik’s popular MOOC, “Financial Sustainability: The Numbers Side of Social Enterprise” conducted in partnership with Acumen Fund, the NYC-based impact investing organization.
Bio: Erik Simanis focuses on advancing innovation and business development strategies for commercializing new product categories, particularly in emerging markets. Erik has led and consulted to new business ventures in India, Africa, Mexico, the former Soviet Union, and the U.S., and has held management positions in the wood products and transportation industries. His recent work is published in the Harvard Business Review, The Wall Street Journal, Sloan Management Review, and the journal Innovations.

The Jill and Ken Iscol Distinguished Environmental Lecture brings eminent scholars, scientists, newsmakers, and opinion leaders to Cornell to address environmental issues of paramount importance to our planet. Hosted by the Atkinson Center, the Iscol Lecture recognizes interdisciplinary scholarship on the frontier of scientific inquiry; provides opportunities for Cornell students, faculty, staff, and the public to gain knowledge about pressing environmental issues; and enriches the university and community. A faculty committee, representing a cross-section of academic disciplines, selects the Iscol lecturer.
