JOHNSON BOOK CLUB RECOMMENDS
Professor Ryan Guggenmos: Modern Love, Revised and Updated: True Stories of Love, Loss, and Redemption

This book contains selections of essays from “Modern Love”, a column that has run weekly in the New York Times since 2004 and has now been made into a podcast and television show. What I love (no pun intended) about this book is that it showcases the many different ways people can love each other. Some of the stories of love are between partners, others are about love within families, some talk about caring for children, there are a couple about pets, and I’m sure there are some I’m forgetting. The book impacted me because it does a wonderful job at normalizing care for one another – whatever form that happens to take – and that’s a reminder that we can almost always use. One last note, the book contains stories of love, loss, and redemption. The stories of love and redemption are heart-warming, but the stories of loss can be pretty sad. You’ve been warned!
