JOHNSON BOOK CLUB RECOMMENDS
Associate Dean Drew Pascarella: The Power Broker by Robert Caro. I grew up on Long Island. As a kid, I spent many summer days at Jones Beach, and summer nights watching concerts at the Jones Beach Amphitheater. I drove to and from the beach on parkways which seemed to have very low overpasses (spoiler alert – the reason for this is reprehensible). As an adult living in New York City, I was captivated by the public infrastructure and the ridiculous number of public pools, and was frustrated that I couldn’t take the subway directly to LaGuardia and JFK. As a financier, I was interested in the autonomy public authorities seemed to have. If you’ve ever wondered why and how all of this was built (or not), and by whom, you need to read the Power Broker. It is modern New York City explained in gory and often horrifying detail. Note: If you ever come to my house, you’ll notice I have an old map of Long Island in the foyer. Ask me to point out the physical evidence of the battle Robert Moses waged and lost with Otto Khan.
