STUDENT COUNCIL
Week of September 6, 2020

WELCOME!
We are so glad to be back. Despite all the changes we have had to make in our daily lives, we hope you're getting into the swing of things if you're a first-year and are finding ways to make the most of our last year at Johnson if you're a second-year. At Student Council, we are committed to continuing our work to bring the community together in this new normal. Check our weekly newsletter, which will be waiting in your inboxes every Sunday evening, to stay informed and connected.

HELP KEEP THE ITHACA COMMUNITY SAFE
The University moved the alert level to yellow and New York state will require we move to two weeks of online classes if cases rise to 100. As professional students and future leaders, we need to set an example for the rest of the Cornell community. Wear face coverings, wash your hands frequently, maintain social distancing, and only gather in person in small groups (and when these practices are maintained). Worried about how to talk to classmates about this? This NPR story might help

ANNUAL FLU VACCINATION
According to the University's Behavioral Compact, flu vaccination is required for all students in the Ithaca area during the Fall 2020 semester. (Exceptions may be made for those who receive a medical, religious, or other exemption). Click here to sign up for a timeslot, learn more about why Cornell is requiring the flu vaccination for students and how to apply for an exemption. The deadline to get your shot is Saturday, October 24.

Connected Conversations: Minority Business Entrepreneurship and Ownership
Wednesday, September 9 at 12 p.m. (EST)
As a collective, Black business owners represent the smallest group of minority business owners in the U.S. The obstacles are many and include access to financial capital, lack of generational wealth, and institutional barriers. In spite of these challenges, Black-owned businesses have created over one million jobs and generated over $165 billion in revenue, based on a 2019 study by the Black Business Caucus. Recent focus on Black business ownership has highlighted the difficulties and opportunities that present both globally and locally during tumultuous times. Join the Smith Family Business Initiative in a conversation with owners and entrepreneurs as we delve deeper into these issues, explore areas of growth, and highlight the resourcefulness and innovation often required of minority owned businesses. Register on Campus Groups.
